Apples in banana bread? I wasn't convinced this combo was a must try when I saw this week's Sweet Melissa Sunday's pick. I had decided to leave the apples out, but at the last minute decided to give it a go. Good call! The apples came to the forefront of the flavor and added a nice texture and unexpected twist to everyday banana bread.
I used Gala apples instead of Granny Smith because that is what I had on hand. The other changes I made were cardamom (yum) in place of ground cloves and a teaspoon of orange zest. The spices added a subtle warmth to the flavor and the orange a hint of sweetness.

Your bread looks gorgeous. Glad you decided on adding the apples! That's what makes this recipe for me. Nice touch with the cardamon -- something i've never tried.
